Insulated vs. Standard Vinyl Siding

Insulated vinyl has a foam backing glued to the panel. It helps, but it is often oversold. Here is what it actually does.

What the foam backing does

The backing makes the panel stiffer, so it sits flatter on the wall and resists dents. It also adds a little insulation. Because the foam stops at each panel edge and at every window and corner, it is not continuous insulation.

If comfort is the goal

If you want a real improvement in comfort and heating bills, continuous exterior insulation under the siding does much more, and attic air sealing usually does more still. Read insulation when replacing siding and see exterior insulation retrofits.

Our take

Choose insulated vinyl for its stiffness and look if you like it. Do not choose it expecting the comfort of a real insulation upgrade.

What matters more than the panel

Whichever panel you choose, the wall behind it decides how the job holds up. Every Atlas vinyl job includes full tear-off, housewrap with taped seams and flashing at every window and door. If the old siding hid soft sheathing or rot, we show you and price the repair before covering it.

When the siding comes off

Replacing siding is the best chance a house gets to add real insulation and air sealing to the walls, because the outside of the wall is open. If comfort and heating bills are part of why you are re-siding, ask about adding continuous insulation at the same time. It costs more than insulated vinyl, and it does much more.

Questions to ask

  • Is the foam backing attached to the panel, or a separate board behind it?
  • What R-value is claimed, and does that number account for the gaps at edges and openings?
  • Would continuous insulation under standard vinyl cost more, and by how much?

Common questions

Does insulated vinyl lower heating bills?

A little. Air sealing the attic and adding continuous exterior insulation have a much bigger effect.
