Window Replacement in New Hampshire

Drafty, foggy or stuck windows are a common reason homeowners start looking for a contractor. Our standard window job is a replacement insert: the old sashes come out, new vinyl double-hung windows go into the existing frames, and the outside trim can be capped in aluminum to cover the wood underneath.

How an insert replacement works

An insert, sometimes called a pocket replacement, keeps your existing window frame and interior trim. We remove the old sashes, stops and balances, check the frame and sill for rot, and set a new vinyl double-hung window into the opening. It is then shimmed, fastened, insulated around the edges and sealed inside and out.

Because the frame and the interior trim stay, an insert replacement disturbs much less of the house than a full-frame replacement. It is the right choice when the frames are sound.

When inserts are not the right choice

If the frame or sill is rotted, if the rough opening has been leaking into the wall, or if you want a different window size or style, the whole window has to come out. Full-frame replacement is priced after a site visit, because the work depends on the siding, trim and wall around each window. If you are replacing siding too, doing the windows at the same time lets us flash each opening properly from the outside.

Aluminum trim capping

Painted wood window trim is one of the most common maintenance chores on a New Hampshire house. We wrap the outside trim in aluminum coil, bent to fit on site, so the trim is protected from water and does not need repainting.

Windows on older homes

On homes built before 1978, old window sashes and trim are among the most likely places to find lead paint. We follow EPA RRP lead-safe practices when we remove them: containment, careful removal, cleanup and a cleaning check at the end.

Is it the windows, or the house?

New windows help, but they are rarely the main reason a house is cold or drafty. Air leaks at the attic and the top of the walls usually matter more. Read why upstairs rooms get drafty and cold, or ask about a building science assessment before spending on windows.

Common questions

Will my interior trim be disturbed?

With an insert replacement, the interior trim stays in place. We remove the stops that hold the old sashes and install new ones, then seal the joints.

Do you install full-frame replacement windows?

Yes, priced after a site visit. Full-frame replacement makes sense when the frame or sill is rotted, when the opening has leaked, or when you want a different size or style.

Can you replace only a few windows?

Yes. The Instant Ballpark prices any number of standard-size windows, starting from one.
